Day One vs Journey (2026): Which Journaling App Should You Choose?
Day One and Journey compared on price, platforms, sync, encryption, AI features and migration, using only what each vendor publishes on its own site.
📌 TL;DR: Day One vs Journey
Day One costs $0 to $74.99 a year with no monthly option, and it favors a focused, private journal on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, Mac, Windows and web. Journey costs $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year (or a one-time $17.99 license), and it adds mood tracking, 60+ Coach programs and sync across Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web and Chrome OS. Pick Day One for a simple daily habit with no subscription math. Pick Journey if you want monthly billing, Chrome OS support, mood tracking or structured coaching.
Day One vs Journey: The Short Answer
Day One is the simpler, privacy-first journal. Journey is the cheaper-to-start, cross-platform app with mood tracking and coaching built in.
Both apps let you write private entries, attach photos and search years of history. If you have only tried one of them, the closest comparisons are our own writeups of each: a Day One alternative breakdown and a Journey alternative breakdown, both covering what people look for when they leave.
The real differences between the two show up in how they bill you, which platforms they cover, and what ships free versus what costs extra. The table below is the fast version.

|---|---|---|
| Best for | Private, distraction-free daily journaling | Cross-platform sync with guided coaching |
| Price | $0, $49.99/yr, $74.99/yr | Free basic app; $6.99/mo, $49.99/yr, $17.99 one-time, $199 lifetime |
| Platforms | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, Mac, Windows, Web | Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web, Chrome OS |

Price: What Each App Costs in 2026
Day One bills annually only, from free to $74.99 a year. Journey is free with basic features, then $6.99 a month, $49.99 a year, a $17.99 one-time license, or $199 for life.
| App | Tier | Price | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day One | Basic | $0/yr | Unlimited entries and journals, 1 photo/entry, encryption, single device |
| Day One | Silver | $49.99/yr | Unlimited photos and video, sync, audio transcription, integrations |
| Day One | Gold | $74.99/yr | Daily Chat, AI summaries and prompts, image generation |
| Journey | Premium | $17.99 one-time | Paid features on one platform, no cloud membership features |
| Journey | Membership | $6.99/mo or $49.99/yr | Sync, 60+ Coach programs, Odyssey AI, 10GB storage, 5,000 entries |
| Journey | Lifetime | $199 | Membership features, paid once |
Day One does not offer monthly billing on any tier. The free Basic plan already covers unlimited entries and journals, daily prompts and templates, and end-to-end encryption, but it caps you at one photo per entry and a single device with no cross-device sync.
Moving up, Silver ($49.99/yr) removes the photo and device limits and adds audio recordings with transcription plus Strava, Zapier and IFTTT integrations. Gold ($74.99/yr) is the AI tier: Daily Chat for guided reflection, reflective AI summaries and prompts, image generation, and a bigger discount on Day One's printed journal service.
Journey's cheapest ongoing cost is $6.99 a month, which is the option Day One does not offer at any tier. Paying annually drops that to $49.99/yr, the same headline price as Day One Silver. The $17.99 Premium license is a one-time purchase that turns on paid features on a single platform only, with none of the cloud membership features like sync or Odyssey AI. The $199 Lifetime Membership is Journey's buy-once option for the full feature set.
Platforms and Sync
Day One covers iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, Mac, Windows and web. Journey covers Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web and Chrome OS, adding Chrome OS; Day One adds Apple Watch.
Checking Day One's own download page, the app is listed for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, Mac, and a Windows app distributed through the Microsoft Store, plus a web version at dayone.me. That confirms a Windows app does exist in 2026, alongside browser extensions. Sync across devices is a Silver-tier feature and above, not something the free Basic plan includes.
Journey publishes support for Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web and Chrome OS. Its sync layer, Journey Cloud Sync, ships as part of Membership and is also the piece that determines whether your data is end-to-end encrypted, covered next.
Where Your Entries Live: Encryption, Backup and Export
Day One encrypts every tier end-to-end, including the free plan. Journey's end-to-end encryption applies only when you use Journey Cloud Sync.
Day One's end-to-end encryption is part of the free Basic tier, so you do not have to pay for it. If privacy is the deciding factor and you never plan to pay, that is a real difference from Journey's model, where encryption is tied to a specific sync option inside Membership. Life Note also encrypts entries; see our privacy and encryption writeup for how that works on our side.
For getting your data out, Day One's own export guide lists PDF on iOS, macOS and Android; JSON on every platform including web and Windows, described as the format "best for re-importing archived data to Day One"; Plain Text or Markdown on iOS, macOS and Android; and CSV on iOS and Android only. Not every format is available everywhere, so check your specific platform before you export.
Journey's own marketing page lists export to .pdf and .docx and backup to .zip, with 10GB of storage and a 5,000-entry cap on Membership. Because that page is Journey's own comparison of itself against Day One, treat its claims about Day One specifically as partisan and check dayoneapp.com directly, which is what this article does throughout.
Writing Experience: Editor, Media, Templates and Prompts
Day One's daily prompts and templates ship on the free tier; Journey's custom templates and geotagging are part of paid Membership.
Day One's Basic tier already includes daily prompts and templates, which covers the basic 5-minute journaling habit without paying anything. Media is the limiting factor at that tier (one photo per entry), and it opens up on Silver to unlimited photos and video, up to 30 items per entry, plus audio recordings with automatic transcription.
Journey's Membership adds custom templates, geotagging and throwback entries that resurface old entries, along with up to 20 media files per entry. If you want a free way to keep a prompt habit going outside either app, a source of daily journal prompts can fill that gap without a subscription.
Mood Tracking and Coaching
Journey's Membership includes a built-in mood tracker and 60+ Coach programs. Day One's published feature list does not include a mood tracker.
Journey's 60+ Coach programs and mood tracker are two of its clearest differentiators from Day One, both included in the paid Membership tier rather than sold separately. Day One's nearest equivalent is Daily Chat on the Gold tier, which is framed as guided reflection rather than mood logging or a structured program library.
If structured, guided writing on a specific topic is what you actually want, a dedicated resource like CBT journaling prompts or a roundup of mental health apps may cover the same need without requiring either subscription.
AI Features: Day One Gold vs Journey Odyssey
Day One Gold names four specific AI features. Journey's page names Odyssey AI as a Membership feature but does not publish further detail beyond that name.
Day One's Gold tier lists four AI features by name: Daily Chat for guided reflection, reflective AI summaries and prompts, image generation, and entry summaries. That is a more detailed public breakdown than Journey publishes for its own AI feature.
Journey's page names Odyssey AI as part of Membership, but we could not confirm further functional detail about it on an official page, so we are not describing it beyond the name. For a side-by-side of how several journaling apps handle AI, see our AI journaling apps comparison, and for a free way to start a prompt habit, an AI journal prompt generator is a lighter-weight option than a paid tier. We cover how an AI mentor differs from a general chatbot in AI mentor journal vs ChatGPT.
Switching From Day One to Journey (or Back)
Journey accepts a Day One JSON export renamed to a specific zip filename, but video and audio from Day One do not carry over.
Journey's own help center confirms the migration path: export your journal from Day One as JSON, rename the resulting file to "1 Entries - Export.zip", then import it from inside Journey's Data & Cloud Services settings. The exact steps vary slightly by platform (Android needs the file moved to your Download folder first; iOS and Mac import from Preferences; web import is only supported through Journey Cloud Sync). Journey's help page also states plainly that video and audio files cannot be imported, so photo-only and text entries make the cleanest crossing.
Going the other direction, Day One's own JSON format is built for "re-importing archived data to Day One," which covers restoring your own Day One backups. We could not confirm on an official Day One page whether it directly imports a Journey export, so if you are moving from Journey back to Day One, check the current help article before you migrate rather than assuming the process is symmetrical.
Who Should Choose Day One
Choose Day One if you want a free-to-start, encrypted journal without a monthly bill, with daily prompts included free.
- You want end-to-end encryption on the free tier, with no payment required to get it
- You want Apple Watch entries, or you write mostly on iPhone, iPad or Mac with Android, Windows and web access when you need it
- You would rather pay once a year than track a monthly subscription
- You want AI features (Daily Chat, summaries, image generation) bundled into one paid tier instead of separate purchases
Who Should Choose Journey
Choose Journey if you want monthly billing, first-class Android or Chrome OS support, or built-in mood tracking and coaching programs.
- You want a monthly plan ($6.99/mo) instead of committing to a full year upfront
- You use Chrome OS, or you want one Membership that covers Android and every desktop
- You want a built-in mood tracker and structured Coach programs without adding a separate app
- You would rather pay once ($17.99 single-platform license or $199 lifetime) than subscribe indefinitely
When Neither Fits: A Journal That Responds
Life Note builds AI mentorship into the core app instead of selling it as an add-on tier, on iOS, Android and web.
Day One and Journey both treat AI as something you pay extra for at a higher tier. Life Note takes a different approach: its AI mentors are grounded in the actual writings of historical thinkers, including Jung, Frankl and Marcus Aurelius, and they respond directly to what you write rather than generating a generic daily prompt.
Life Note runs on iOS, Android and web, with a free tier and Premium at $10.99/month or $99.99/year. Day One does not offer a monthly option at any price, and the mentors are built to surface patterns across entries over time, not just summarize a single one. If you want to see how that compares to a broader field, our personal growth apps roundup and the 8 best AI journaling apps both cover where Life Note sits next to Day One, Journey and the rest.

Instead of a generic AI summary, Life Note pairs your entries with mentors grounded in real thinkers, free to start on iOS, Android and web.
What Research Says About Digital Journaling
Journaling research spans a real, moderate effect in some meta-analyses to a near-zero effect in others, depending on method and population.
Neither Day One nor Journey publishes outcome data specific to their own apps. The broader research on expressive and reflective writing is worth reading with that gap in mind, and it is mixed on its own terms.
| Study | Sample | Finding | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smyth 1998 | Meta-analysis, 13 studies | d=0.47 | J Consult Clin Psych 66(1):174-184 |
| Frattaroli 2006 | Meta-analysis, 146 studies | r=.075 | Psych Bull 132(6):823-865 |
| Baikie & Wilhelm 2005 | Review | 3-5 sessions of 15-20 min | Adv Psychiatr Treat 11:338-346 |
| Smyth et al. 2018 | RCT, n=70 | 15 min x3/wk x12 wk, lower anxiety at month 1 | JMIR Ment Health 5(4):e11290 |
| Mogk et al. 2006 | Meta-analysis, 30 RCTs | g=0.04, non-significant | GMS Psycho-Social-Medicine |
Read together, results are mixed and vary by person, method and topic; neither app has published outcome data of its own. The apps in this comparison, including our own, are tools for the habit, not a substitute for what the underlying research does or does not show.
Limitations of This Comparison
Prices and features are as published on the vendors' official sites on 16 September 2026 and are subject to change without notice. This is a desk comparison of published features and documentation, not a usability test of either app. Life Note is our own product, and we have described it using the same standard we applied to Day One and Journey: only what is published and verifiable.
